The Regional Government, through the Regional Directorate for European Affairs and External Cooperation, and the Centre for Humanistic Studies of the University of the Azores will sign tomorrow, Thursday, October 27, a memorandum of understanding for the creation of an Inter-University Research Network for the Outermost Regions, the RIU-RUP Network.

The document will be signed at the end of a meeting on "The Outermost Regions and Europe: challenges, models and opportunities," which will take place tomorrow in Caloura, São Miguel Island.

The meeting, which consists of five panels, brings together some thirty researchers and academics from the Outermost Regions as well as other interested parties from other European Universities.

The opening session will include speeches by Carlos Amaral, Regional Director for European Affairs and External Cooperation, Flávio Tiago, Regional Director for Science and Technology, and Artur Gil, representing the Rector's Office of the University of the Azores. The inaugural speech will be delivered by João Bosco Mota Amaral.

The memorandum of understanding for the creation of the RIU-RUP Network will be signed by university representatives from the Azores, Madeira, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, La Laguna (Canary Islands), French Guiana, Reunion, Antilles, Coimbra, Verona (Italy), Siegen (Germany) and Lille (France).

The RIU-RUP Network aims to be a network for sharing scientific knowledge at a university level, ensuring the consolidation of the best possible forms of cooperation in the most varied areas that are relevant to the development of the Outermost Regions. It includes the development of joint research projects or others between the parties involved and their academies, among these academies, and with European Union institutions, under the scope of this network.

In turn, it also aims to ensure the dissemination of the results of scientific, research or other work carried out in their own Academies, through this network. It is based on the premise that each party will be a representative in their academies, disseminating the existence of this network and the opportunities for collaboration, encouraging the involvement of more researchers and other interested parties in achieving the goals of the network, which should meet at least once a year.
