The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, António Ventura, announced today that "the new water supply system is being installed on all islands." According to him, it is intended to "control and rationalise the amount of water to be supplied, preventing the water from being used by other economic activities."

This system, as the government official noted, "is of exclusive use to farmers who hold an electronic key to access the water supply." This system will be installed for the first time in the parish of Terra-Chã, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island.

"This is an important step towards the sustainability of water supply to agriculture and the overall management of water collection, storage and supply. All new water supply stations will now have these sustainability features," said the government official.

For the Regional Secretary, the investment made by the Regional Institute of Agrarian Planning (IROA) in agricultural accessibility, namely roads, "is a public investment that goes beyond agriculture and animal husbandry. In fact, they are multi-purpose roads that are increasingly important for tourism as well as for the mobility of local communities for leisure, health and sports purposes."

Last week, IROA opened the works concerning two projects for water supply and construction of agricultural roads in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, corresponding to an investment of 380 thousand Euros.

In regard to agricultural water supply, the works were carried out to extend the Veredas network, which includes a supply station with a magnetic control key and a 2,400-metre distribution pipeline, with 27 branches on the plot, covering an area of 380 hectares.

In turn, the works contract for the construction of the Canada dos Quarenta agricultural road included the laying of concrete over a 750-metre stretch as well as the construction of culverts and concrete ditches to ensure the proper drainage of rainwater.

This was the first project in the area to include the expansion of the agricultural planning perimeter in the western area of Terceira island, recently created by IROA.
