Presidência do Governo Regional
The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, stated today that Conseran's investment in a new cannery on the island of Pico is made with a "strategic vision" and it represents the creation of "added value" for the Region at different levels.
"We believe in the potential of our geography with regard to the economy of the sea. As Vitorino Nemésio said, as important as history is our own geography, and this observation has never been more pertinent," defended the government official today.
José Manuel Bolieiro spoke at the ceremony of laying the first stone of the new Conseran cannery, which will be located in the parish of Bandeiras, municipality of Madalena.
The President of the Government recalled that the Azores are, for the economy of the sea, a territory of "strategic relevance" in the "European and world context." In this context, the Region must continue to seek full sustainability in areas such as the economy, the environment or social matters.
"I would like, on behalf of citizenship, to offer you a special greeting and a sign of confidence," the President of the Government also said, addressing the manager of Conseran, José Freitas.
"This commitment opens a new cycle, not only on the island of Pico but also in the economy of the Azores and in the economy of the sea, and I acknowledge its strategic vision," he said.
Today's event was also attended, among others, by the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Teresa Coelho, the Regional Secretary for Sea and Fisheries, Manuel São João, the Regional Secretary for Youth, Vocational Training and Employment, Duarte Freitas, and the Mayor of Madalena, the municipality where the plant will be located, José António Soares.
The project for the new plant on the island of Pico has an estimated budget of about 15 million Euros. It should create more than 100 jobs and is expected to be completed within a year.
