The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, made today a follow-up visit to the construction site of the second phase of the Horta Bypass on the island of Faial, a major infrastructure investment under the “Logistics Networks – Azores Regional Road Network,” funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

During the visit, representatives from the project supervision team, the contractor consortium, the Horta Municipal Council, and the Island Services of the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures were present at the site.

Berta Cabral emphasised the need to meet the deadlines set for the project, recalling the contractual commitments made to the European Union and highlighting the importance of the Horta bypass within the RRP investment package.

“This project will open up new horizons for the city of Horta, shorten distances and ensure safer traffic conditions. It will create new opportunities for the city’s expansion and its development beyond its historic centre,” she said.

The government official also noted that “Faial has waited more than 30 years for this investment,” adding that it is now underway and will soon contribute to the island’s socio-economic development, improving the quality of life for Faial residents.

However, Berta Cabral stressed the need to maintain “an intense and orderly pace of work” and to increase, whenever necessary, the resources available to avoid risks during the implementation of the works.

The works contract for the construction of the Horta bypass has been awarded to the consortium Tecnovia-Açores, SA./ Afavias, SA./Marques, SA., for a total price of €13.7 million (including VAT). The project covers a stretch of approximately 3.4 km, incorporating three roundabouts and two engineering structures to cross over existing roads.
