The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, presented today the conclusions of the thematic Government Council meeting held at the Conceição Palace in Ponta Delgada.

The OECD report “Preparing for Demographic Change in the Azores, Portugal” was presented at this thematic Government Council meeting. It was prepared under the European Commission’s Talent Booster Mechanism (TBM).

The head of the Azorean Government highlighted the importance of the report as a significant technical contribution to informing public policy-making, emphasising that the Region now has a stronger knowledge to tackle demographic challenges.

“This document enables us to improve the quality of policy-making, based on evidence and a thorough analysis of the situation in the Azores,” he said.

The President of the Regional Government emphasised that the results of the OECD report confirm the need to continue investing in policies that encourage people to settle in the Region, boost employment and improve the living conditions of Azorean families.

“Demographics are a strategic priority, and this report underlines the importance of the path we have been following,” he emphasised.

The report highlights trends requiring attention and a sustained response, particularly regarding changes in the working-age population and demographic ageing, which are impacting economic and territorial organisation as well as the provision of public services.

José Manuel Bolieiro advocated an integrated and long-term approach: “We are working to ensure that the Azores are an increasingly attractive Region for living, working and investing,” he said.

The head of the Azorean Government also highlighted that several of the recommendations issued by OECD are aligned with measures already underway, particularly in the areas of employment, housing, skills and mobility.

“We have been implementing policies aimed at strengthening job security, tackling precarious employment and increasing households’ disposable income, thereby creating the conditions for people to settle in the Region,” he said.

José Manuel Bolieiro also highlighted the importance of continuing to invest in human capital and creating opportunities for young people.
