The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, received the President of the National Police Officers' Union, Superintendent Bruno Carvalho Pereira, at an audience for the exchange of greetings.

The meeting, held at the Sant’Ana Palace in Ponta Delgada, was marked by constructive dialogue on matters concerning the staffing and infrastructures of the Public Security Police (PSP) in the Region.

Both parties sought to agree on a shared vision, focused on a reformist approach and the optimisation of existing resources, rather than simply demanding additional funding.

“We wish to promote a reformist vision, based on efficient management and the optimal use of available resources, rather than a purely demand-driven approach,” stated the President of the Government.

During the hearing, the importance of leveraging the existing human and material resources was highlighted, with a view to promoting more efficient management tailored to the specific characteristics of the Azores.

“The Azores have their own unique characteristics, starting with their geographical dispersion, which calls for smart and tailored solutions,” stated José Manuel Bolieiro.

Another key point highlighted was the need to create mechanisms to encourage the recruitment and retention of police officers in the Region. The difficulty in attracting and retaining professionals in decentralised areas was at the heart of the discussion and was considered a priority.

“We must be able to create the right conditions to attract and retain qualified professionals in the Azores, ensuring stability and continuity in the services provided to our communities,” he said.

The meeting took place in an atmosphere of institutional cooperation, with a commitment to maintaining close and ongoing dialogue on these matters.

“Security is a key pillar of social and territorial cohesion, and must be built on collaboration between institutions,” he concluded.
