The Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, stated on Friday that the Regional Health Service (SRS) is preparing to implement a “Value-Based Healthcare” model to measure patient outcomes in relation to the costs of care provided.

Mónica Seidi spoke in Ponta Delgada during a presentation on the topic “Health Challenges in the Azores” at an event held at the Marina Atlântico Hotel in Ponta Delgada, an initiative organised by SEDES Açores.

“This approach aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the system, in a context marked by an ageing population and an increase in chronic illnesses, factors that have been driving up demand for healthcare,” added the government official.

In this context, the Regional Government plans to introduce cost accounting in regional healthcare institutions, with a view to determining the costs associated with clinical activity more accurately and supporting more informed management decisions.

The Regional Secretary emphasised that the aim is to ensure a more effective use of available resources, whilst simultaneously enhancing the quality and accessibility of the care provided to the Azorean population.

Mónica Seidi also highlighted the need to develop the governance model of the regional health system, advocating a reorganisation that would increase administrative efficiency and improve the institutions’ responsiveness.

“We want more and better, and we will do more and better, always with decisions based on the Programme of the Regional Government of the Azores and with a single purpose: ensuring the best possible healthcare response for all Azoreans,” concluded the government official.
