The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, attended the inauguration ceremony of António José Seguro as the 21st President of the Portuguese Republic, held today at the National Assembly, where he had the opportunity to offer his congratulations and wishes for success in the high office he now takes up at the service of Portugal and the Portuguese people.

António José Seguro, a native of Penamacor, has been involved in public and national political life, having served, among other positions, as a member of the National Assembly, Member of the European Parliament, Assistant Minister and Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, before being elected President of the Republic in the 2026 presidential elections.

José Manuel Bolieiro emphasised that this moment marks a new institutional cycle in the democratic life of the country, which should be experienced "in a spirit of cooperation, a sense of responsibility and a commitment to the common good."

The head of the Azorean Government reiterated the “full availability of the Government of the Azores for joint work in a spirit of loyalty and collaboration,” valuing dialogue and institutional cooperation between the Presidency of the Republic and the Autonomous Region.

"In a particularly demanding international context, joint work between the Republic’s institutions is particularly important to respond to the challenges facing the country, strengthen national cohesion and confirm the Azores' role in the context of Portugal's geopolitics and geostrategy," he said.

José Manuel Bolieiro pointed out that "enhancing the Atlantic position of the Azores also contributes to strengthening Portugal's strategic projection as well as its position in Europe and the Atlantic"

The President of the Regional Government added that "the Region will continue to be available to collaborate in a spirit of institutional trust and a sense of responsibility, for the benefit of the Azoreans and the country."

José Manuel Bolieiro also acknowledged Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for his service as President of the Republic over the last decade, highlighting his close relations with the Region.

The head of the Azorean Government emphasised “the attention, friendship and respect he has always shown towards the Azores and the Azoreans,” adding that “the Azorean people are grateful for the close and genuine interest he has shown in the Region throughout his term of office.”
