The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, on behalf of the Government of the Azores, expresses his deep sorrow at the passing of Nuno Morais Sarmento, a prominent figure in Portuguese political, institutional and civic life.

A lawyer by training, Nuno Morais Sarmento had a distinguished career in national public life, having held positions of great responsibility in government, namely as Minister of the Presidency and Minister of State and the Presidency. Over the course of his career, he established himself as an attentive and committed participant in democratic debate, always guided by a sense of statehood and defence of institutions.

More recently, as President of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), he continued to make a significant contribution to strengthening relations between Portugal and the United States of America. In this context, he clearly recognised the geopolitical and geostrategic importance of the Azores in the Atlantic, valuing the Region's role in deepening transatlantic ties.

Nuno Morais Sarmento was also a friend of the Azores, maintaining close ties and paying close attention to regional affairs, namely the contribution of the Azoreans to Portugal's presence in the Atlantic.

José Manuel Bolieiro recalled Nuno Morais Sarmento as "a man of clear thinking, great intelligence and a deep sense of public service," adding that "the importance of public debate and respect for democratic institutions have always marked his civic and political intervention."

At this sad time, the head of the Azorean Government, on his own behalf and on behalf of the Government of the Azores, offers his deepest condolences to the family, friends and all those who knew him.
