Azores strengthen commitment to energy transition through new European project
Secretaria Regional do Turismo, Mobilidade e Infraestruturas
The Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, through the Regional Directorate for Energy, is a partner in the new European project NESOI Plus – New Energy Solutions Optimised for Island Outermost Regions, which will be an important tool for accelerating the energy transition in the Azores.
Focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities of island territories, the project aims to support the Outermost Regions in overcoming the challenges associated with geographical isolation, strengthening their leadership in more sustainable, resilient and inclusive energy solutions. One of the main goals of NESOI Plus is to support the creation and development of renewable energy communities, empowering local entities to play an active role in modernising the energy sector.
NESOI Plus is co-financed under the LIFE programme through the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). It has an overall budget of about €1.7 million and will run until August 2028. The Autonomous Region of the Azores will receive around €117,000 to develop the actions planned under this initiative.
The project brings together a diverse consortium of European entities from Italy, Belgium, Spain, Greece, France, and Portugal, which will provide technical expertise and support for policy development and capacity-building activities, contributing to accelerating energy progress in the Outermost Regions of the European Union.
