The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, welcomed today the appointment of José Manuel Durão Barroso as the new President of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), emphasising that the Foundation will be led by a figure with "experience, authority and international recognition" at a time when transatlantic relations are once again particularly relevant.

José Manuel Bolieiro highlighted Durão Barroso's career at the service of Portugal and Europe, recalling that he was Prime Minister and President of the European Commission, positions that required decision-making skills, strategic vision and a great sense of responsibility.

"He is someone with a proven track record and a very clear understanding of what is at stake when we talk about the Atlantic, Europe and relations with the United States," he said.

The head of the Azorean Government also highlighted José Manuel Durão Barroso's longstanding interest in the Region, noting that he is very familiar with the Azores and their role in promoting Portugal abroad.

"Throughout his career, he has never ignored the value of the Azores, as a territory, as a bridge, and as an essential part of Portugal's relations with the United States of America," he said.

In this context, José Manuel Bolieiro recalled that FLAD is a key instrument in bringing Portugal and the United States closer together and that, in this connection, the Azores have their own unique and irreplaceable place.

“Our geography and history place us at the heart of the Atlantic. And it is here, often, that these relations become a reality: in institutional dialogue, scientific and academic cooperation, culture, mobility, and new opportunities that can benefit the Region and the country,” he added.

The President of the Government reiterated the Azorean Government's willingness to continue working with FLAD, with renewed ambition, "so that transatlantic cooperation translates into projects and results that bring people, institutions, and communities closer."

The event ended with José Manuel Bolieiro expressing his gratitude and solidarity to Nuno Morais Sarmento, who is now ending his term as president of FLAD, thanking him for his work and for keeping the Azores present in the Foundation's activities during his term.
