The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, accompanied by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, opened the 11th São Miguel Holstein Friesian Breed Autumn Competition this Friday at the São Miguel Exhibition Park in Sant'Ana.

José Manuel Bolieiro emphasised that the competition "is the confirmation of the excellence of the Azores brand," pointing out the commitment of producers and the relevance of the genetic potential developed in the Region. The President of the Regional Government recalled that the agricultural sector "continues to be an essential pillar of regional identity and economy," sustained by generations of farmers.

The head of the Azorean Government also made a point of highlighting the contribution of the agricultural associations, whose credibility, he said, "has been fundamental to the success of the sector and the food self-sufficiency of the islands."

The President of the Government took the opportunity to mention the recent commendation awarded to Jorge Rita, President of the São Miguel Agricultural Association, considering it to be an "entirely fair" recognition reflecting the ongoing work carried out on behalf of farmers.

Regarding public policy, José Manuel Bolieiro highlighted the administrative simplification measures recently introduced, with a view to reducing procedures and speeding up investment processes. Among the changes, he mentioned the elimination of maximum investment limits, minimum mandatory areas and economic and financial studies considered unnecessary, as well as the simplification of verification procedures, with the presentation of an invoice sufficing. Since 2023, the support rate has risen to 80%, increasing the investment capacity of farms.

The President of the Government also announced new funding opportunities. Under the PEPAC programme, the call for applications will open on December 10, lasting for six months and making a total of €24 million available. The VITIS programme, aimed at revitalising wine production in the Azores, will have €2 million available, with applications open between December 2 and January 9. These instruments represent a combined investment of €26 million to boost agricultural investment.

José Manuel Bolieiro also added that, from 2026 onwards, payments to farmers will be made in Euros and according to a schedule similar to POSEI, ensuring "greater predictability and stability for farm income."

The ceremony was also attended by the President of the São Miguel Agricultural Association, Jorge Rita, and the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Jaime Vieira.
