Message from the Regional Government of the Azores on World Senior Citizen Day
location Angra do Heroísmo

Secretaria Regional da Saúde e Segurança Social

World Senior Citizen Day is celebrated today, and I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all those who, throughout their lives, have given society and their loved ones all their wisdom and experience.

The elderly play a fundamental role in Azorean society: people, from the youngest to the oldest, are truly at the heart of this Government. We want our elderly to live in peace and with comfort and dignity.

There is an unparalleled legacy in the coalition governments regarding the progress made in the support provided to our elderly.

Since 2021, as a result of successive increases in the pension supplement, €140 million has been paid to our elderly. In turn, COMPAMID (support for the purchase of medicine) has grown by 93% and is now awarded to 26,386 beneficiaries.

The "New Elderly" programme, an innovative programme created during the coalition’s first term in office, now covers more than 465 beneficiaries. The support provided under the Informal Caregiver programme has been reviewed and increased, and this year, more than €1 million has already been paid to informal caregivers in the Region.

We celebrate this date today because it is important to value everyone without exception, and because we want to raise awareness throughout society of the importance that our elderly people have had and continue to have in building our society and any society.
