The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, welcomed today the new United States Consul to the Azores, Rita Rico, who began her term in August of this year, at the Sant'Ana Palace.

The head of the Azorean Government highlighted the historical significance of the U.S. consulate in Ponta Delgada, the oldest continuously operating consulate in the world, celebrating 230 years of existence.

"The Azores regard the United States of America as friends, partners and loyal allies, with whom we share a common history and purpose," stated José Manuel Bolieiro. He also emphasised the "importance" of Lajes Air Base for international security and the geostrategic projection of the Region.

The President of the Government also pointed out that cooperation between both countries could be deepened in several areas, particularly in science and technology, having recalled the contribution of Azorean communities in the United States as a cultural and human link that strengthens these ties.

"We want to continue deepening relations, strengthening cooperation in areas where the Azores are leaders and where we can add shared value," he added.

Consul Rita Rico seized the opportunity to clarify the employment situation at Lajes Air Base, assuring that there are no workers employed by the US Armed Forces earning less than the minimum wage in force in the Region. She explained that salary increases are defined within the framework of the bilateral agreement between Portugal and the United States, and are always applied retroactively when there are delays.

She praised the Regional Government's willingness to engage in dialogue, recognising the importance of ensuring that discussions on the Lajes Air Base are based on facts and trust between allies.

The President of the Azorean Government also took the opportunity to wish Rita Rico every success in her new role, expressing his confidence that her international experience will be an asset in strengthening cooperation between the United States of America and the Azores. José Manuel Bolieiro stressed that "the Government of the Azores will do everything in its power to bolster the close ties, friendship and mutual trust between both entities."

With a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a master's degree from the University of Guadalajara and a bachelor's degree from Stanford University, she brings extensive international and academic experience to her position.

A native of Chicago, Rita Rico resides with her family in San Diego, California. She is accompanied by her husband and two teenage children.
