Space launch centre in Santa Maria brings clear benefits to the Azores, says José Manuel Bolieiro
Presidência do Governo Regional
The Regional Government is pleased to announce the completion of the licensing process for the Launch Centre in Santa Maria, which will be operated by the Atlantic Spaceport Consortium (ASC). This milestone stems from the commitment and determination of the ASC and the joint efforts of the Portuguese Space Agency and ANACOM with various national entities, consolidating the Azores as a strategic hub in the space sector.
For the President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, "this licensing is a historic step that reflects the vision and commitment of the Region."
He continued: "It positions the Azores as a relevant player in space innovation, with clear benefits for Europe and our archipelago, paving the way for future orbital launches from Santa Maria."
This project is fully aligned with the Azores Space Strategy, which leverages the archipelago's unique location to foster an innovative space ecosystem and make the Azores the Atlantic Hub for Space.
It aims to attract investment, promote cutting-edge technology and create economic and social opportunities for the Azorean population, while always safeguarding the safety of the population and the environment.
The Government of the Azores closely monitored the licensing process, ensuring that this project meets the Region's expectations and strategic needs. This close involvement reflects the Regional Government's commitment to the success of the initiative. The Region remains committed to future developments, working in partnership with national and international entities to maximise the impact of the Santa Maria Space Ecosystem and pave the way for new space ambitions.
For Europe, this centre strengthens its capabilities for accessing space from a privileged location in the Atlantic, increasing its autonomy and resilience in the sector. For the Azores, it represents an opportunity for economic diversification, attracting investment and establishing itself as a space hub, reiterating its historic role as a transatlantic connecting point.
The licensing of the Launch Centre is a step forward in the Azores' journey towards orbital space, supported by a commercial operation and with customers for launches starting next year.
The Region is determined to harness this momentum, promoting collaborations and innovations that will strengthen its position in the space industry. In this regard, the Azorean Government maintains a clear intention of having orbital launch operations from Santa Maria licensed in the near future.
