The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, received today the United States Consul in the Azores, Margaret Campbell, at the Santana Palace for a farewell audience.
The meeting was an opportunity to thank and recognise the work carried out during her term of office. It was marked by a deep understanding of the reality of the Azores and a strengthening of the strategic role of the U.S. Consulate in the Region.
"It was an honour to have a Consul who was sensitive to and understood the geopolitical importance of the Azores, valuing the historical presence of what is the oldest U.S. consulate in continuous operation in the world," stated José Manuel Bolieiro.
The head of the Regional Government expressed his gratitude for the Consul's commitment to promoting the consulate, both in her local activities and in her efforts to raise awareness among the U.S. administration of its importance.
“Margaret Campbell left her mark. She got to know the nine islands, their people and our culture. And more than that, she took with her a clear message for the U.S. administration: this consulate is vital, not only for the Azores but also for the relations between our two countries,” he added.
He also highlighted the humanitarian and approachable side of the Consul, who, throughout her term, built trust and respect with the Azorean communities, showing constant interest in cultural, economic, and scientific cooperation.
Finally, the President of the Regional Government reiterated his best wishes to Margaret Campbell for the next stage of her diplomatic career, noting that she "remains in the hearts of the Azores and the Azoreans."
