The Azores Agricultural Fair 2025 kicked off this Friday with a strong demonstration of confidence in the present and future of regional agriculture.

At the opening ceremony, held at the Exhibition Park in Santana, the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, praised the role of the fair as "the greatest display of Azorean agricultural pride" and announced a range of solid measures that mark a new cycle of growth for the sector.

"The Agricultural Fair is much more than just a showcase for products. It is a vibrant expression of the strength of our rural world, the dedication of our farmers and the modern vision we have for agriculture in the Azores," stated the President of the Government.

The head of the Azorean Government highlighted the growth in the "organisational quality" of the fair over the years, emphasising the role of the Azores Agricultural Federation and the São Miguel Agricultural Association in mobilising, innovating and raising the sector to new heights.

"This event is an example of what we can achieve when there is organisation, ambition and work done with a sense of mission. It is a benchmark for other associations in our society," he stressed.

José Manuel Bolieiro reiterated that the Government's agricultural policy has been guided by three fundamental goals: adding value to the activity, creating jobs, and strengthening food self-sufficiency.

"Agriculture is, and will continue to be, one of the pillars of our development. It is the soul of the Azores," he said.

One of the most significant announcements is the 10% increase in funding for Maintaining Agricultural Activity in Less Favoured Areas, corresponding to an additional allocation of one million Euros from EU funds.

The entry into force of the new legislation on the Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was also announced. It raises the maximum investment support rates to 85% and simplifies the eligibility criteria.

“We want modern, efficient, digital and sustainable agriculture. For this reason, we are creating better conditions for investment and installation, especially for our young people,” stated José Manuel Bolieiro.

In this area, increased premiums have been announced for young farmers: 15 thousand Euros for part-time installations and 55 thousand Euros for full-time installations. In addition, the concept of "Small Farms" has been created, with specific support reaching 85%, and investment ceilings for micro-projects and larger projects have been doubled.

The President of the Government also announced the extension of PRORURAL+ until September 30, 2025, ensuring greater scope for the completion of ongoing projects. He highlighted the timely payment of the POSEI 2024/2025 campaign, which has already been carried out without cuts or apportionments.

"We have kept our commitment: predictability in support, stability in payments and appreciation for those who work the land," he said.

In addition, the President of the Government revealed that a regional payment schedule will be implemented, starting in 2026, with fixed dates each month, providing farmers with greater security and financial planning. He also announced that conditions will continue to be created so that Azorean agriculture can be a source of pride and sustainable income.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Azores Agricultural Federation, Jorge Rita, the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Alexandre Gaudêncio, and the Mayor of Ponta Delgada, Pedro do Nascimento Cabral.

The presence of the highest figures of the Republic and the Region symbolised the political and institutional recognition of the strategic importance of Azorean agriculture.

At the closing session, José Manuel Bolieiro delivered a message of confidence and enthusiasm: "The present is here, at this fair. And the future lies in the path we are building together, with strategy, dedication and passion for this land."
