The Regional Secretariat for Transport, Mobility and Infrastructures, through the Regional Directorate for Energy, is a partner in the new European project designated as REMOTE - Reshaping Energy Models for Outermost Territories, co-funded by the Interreg Europe programme.

Spanning eight semesters, the project brings together seven Outermost Regions - the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, French Guiana, Réunion, Mayotte and Saint Martin - with the common goal of developing regional policies conducive to energy self-sufficiency.

These regions, due to their remoteness, face very specific challenges. Despite significant progress in the adoption of renewable energy sources, they continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels. This reality is exacerbated by isolated energy systems, unconnected to continental grids, which makes it more difficult to guarantee a stable and sustainable supply.

The REMOTE project aims to respond to these difficulties by strengthening innovative public policies, decentralising energy systems, tackling energy poverty, and stimulating research and innovation in the territories involved.

The Autonomous Region of the Azores will have a budget of about 196 thousand Euros to develop its actions under the project, as part of a total amount exceeding 1.7 million Euros.

The REMOTE kick-off meeting took place this week on the island of Réunion, marking the beginning of a strategic collaboration between the Outermost Regions towards a more sustainable, resilient and self-reliant energy future.
