The protocol for the Molecular Characterisation of Apis mellifera in the Azores was signed at the São Miguel Agrarian Development Service. It was established between the Azores Agricultural Federation and the company Biotech Synergy, Lda, a spin-off of the University of the Azores based at TERINOV - Terceira Island Science and Technology Park.

This initiative aims to identify, using rigorous genetic testing, the possible existence of a specific lineage of honey bees in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The protocol was signed in the presence of the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, who stressed the importance of the study.

"This protocol represents an important milestone in furthering scientific knowledge about the bees found in the Azores. With molecular characterisation, it will be possible to verify whether there is a specific genetic lineage, which could have significant implications for the preservation and enhancement of this resource," he said.

The initiative reflects the joint efforts of different organisations to enhance natural resources and promote agricultural sustainability.

"Beekeeping is a fundamental pillar of our agriculture, not only due to the production of honey and its derivatives but also due to its indispensable role in pollination and the maintenance of healthy agricultural ecosystems," said the Regional Secretary.

The Azores Agricultural Federation, as the representative of producers and their interests, reinforces its commitment to innovation, sustainability and scientific knowledge applied to the agricultural sector with this collaboration.

This project is part of a broader strategy towards innovation and promotion of endogenous resources to support sustainable and economically viable agricultural practices in line with the Region's environmental and production challenges.

"With this study, we are taking an essential step towards better understanding our natural heritage and making informed decisions that will strengthen Azorean agriculture in the long term," noted António Ventura.
