Press release - Regional Accounts
Secretaria Regional das Finanças, Planeamento e Administração Pública
The National Statistics Institute (INE) released today information on the 2024 accounts, highlighting the following points regarding the Region's deficit and debt:
The Region's deficit totalled 184.8 million Euros, an increase of 51.4 million Euros compared to 2023. This increase is due to three main factors:
1. An adjustment made by INE to the RRP totalling 49.4 million Euros, which negatively affected the national accounts balance;
2. Active management of the Region's public debt, totalling 13.8 million Euros;
3. A 75 million Euro financial operation aimed at transforming commercial debt into financial debt, which worsened the balance of the direct regional administration.
Without these operations, the budget balance in 2024 would have improved compared to 2023.
The Region's public debt totalled 3,292.1 million Euros in 2024, just 88.5 million Euros more than in 2023.
This variation, the smallest seen in recent years, is essentially due to the 75 million Euro financing operation authorised to transform commercial debt into financial debt, apart from the 13.8 million Euro active public debt management.
Regarding the weight of debt in the regional GDP, it should be noted that, in line with the reversal recorded since 2022, there will be a further drop of about two percentage points in 2024, with this indicator at 57.7%.
