The Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries, Mário Rui Pinho, participated in the closing session of SMART OCEAN DAYS, an event organised by the Association for the Development and Training of the Azores Sea - ADFMA (the entity running the Azores Maritime School) in partnership with BlueOasis and Fórum Oceano.
The meeting brought together experts, researchers and representatives of the scientific and maritime sectors to discuss the latest innovations and strategies of the blue economy.
Mário Rui Pinho stated that "knowledge of the Azores sea is an asset for consolidating autonomy" and emphasised the Azorean Government's commitment to the blue economy and innovation.
He stressed that this commitment presupposes the development of policies or initiatives that promote the application of scientific knowledge and innovation in technological development. Among the initiatives highlighted is the creation of an experimental research and development centre linked to the Azores Sea - MARTEC - and the acquisition of a new research vessel.
The Regional Secretary highlighted the importance of adopting effective control and surveillance practices as well as implementing governance policies that contribute to mitigating adverse effects, preserving marine resources and guaranteeing the well-being of the Azorean population.
