Presidência do Governo Regional
The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, took part in the third day of Better Tourism Lisboa (BTL) 2025, accompanied by the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral.
During the event, he welcomed the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, to the Region's stand and highlighted the archipelago's role as a national benchmark in sustainable tourism.
The head of the Azorean Government noted that the Azores have been "an example for Portugal, with a leading attitude towards sustainability." He recalled that the archipelago was the first in the world to be certified as a "Sustainable Destination" and it has already reached the Gold Level following an audit in October.
He pointed out that this recognition stems from the "continuous and structured work" aimed at creating value throughout the territory, promoting balanced growth in the tourism sector.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro praised the Regional Government's efforts, stating that "the Azores are a source of pride for Portugal." In this regard, he pointed out how José Manuel Bolieiro's leadership has brought the archipelago to "levels of excellence" in tourism, contributing to the country's prestige.
At BTL 2025, the Azores are represented by about 40 stands, bringing together 37 regional tourism companies and agents, in addition to the stands of the archipelago's 19 municipalities.
Luís Montenegro visited the exhibitors and got to know the diversity of the Azorean tourist offer up close, confirming the Region's commitment to promoting the destination.
José Manuel Bolieiro also held strategic meetings, including one with the Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Similar Services of Portugal (AHRESP), aimed at drawing up a protocol to enhance Azorean cuisine and mitigate seasonality.
"This is an essential step towards strengthening the Azores' gastronomic identity and ensuring that the tourist offer remains dynamic throughout the year," stated the President of the Government.
With a well-defined strategy and a solid commitment to sustainability, the Azores continue to establish themselves as a benchmark destination, leading sustainable tourism in Portugal and demonstrating that it is possible to combine economic growth, heritage and balanced development on all islands.
