Regional Government expresses sorrow over death of Vasco Rocha Vieira

The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, expressed today his deep sorrow over the death of Lieutenant General Vasco Rocha Vieira, who performed important duties at the service of Portugal.
Minister of the Republic for the Azores between 1986 and 1991, Vasco Rocha Vieira stood out for the integrity and responsibility with which he performed his duties.
Vasco Rocha Vieira also stood out as Governor of Macau between 1991 and 1999. During this period, he managed the territory until the transfer of administration to China, an historical process of great importance, and conducted with firmness and a sense of state.
"I pay tribute to a man who, throughout his career, always carried out his public duties with dignity, a sense of duty and a strong commitment to the public interest. He leaves a legacy of service to the country, which will be remembered with respect and gratitude," stated José Manuel Bolieiro on behalf of the Azorean Government.
The President of the Government also conveyed his deepest condolences to Vasco Rocha Vieira's family and friends, sharing in their grief and recognising the importance of this figure in Portugal's history.
