Last Wednesday, the Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, chaired the launch of the work to expand the Elderly Support Centre of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Madalena do Pico.

This expansion will provide another 30 residential vacancies for the island's ageing population, bringing the number of places from 74 to a total of 104 in this structure. It represents an overall planned investment of 4.6 million Euros under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

At the laying of the foundation stone, Mónica Seidi said that, for the Regional Government, it was essential to "do something tangible to create better conditions for those who have worked all their lives and now deserve dignified rest with support and care."

"For this reason, the support for this institution has already exceeded ten million Euros since 2021," she stressed.

This new structure has a residential capacity of 30 beds, distributed over 13 double rooms and four single rooms, based on the existing services, namely the kitchen and laundry, administrative services and other functional areas.

Access is via an elevated covered walkway, considering the architectural style of the existing building to create a harmonious expansion.

In addition to modernisation, this expansion will bring more comfort to the building. Mónica Seidi highlighted the creation of "more space to give more and better responses to the ageing population using the Residential Structure for the Elderly services as people are at the centre of the Regional Government's concerns."
