Secretaria Regional do Turismo, Mobilidade e Infraestruturas
The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, received the Councillor for Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodriguez, in Ponta Delgada.
This meeting between government officials addressed matters of common interest to the two autonomous regions, conditioned by their remoteness, namely air and sea transport.
Councillor Pablo Rodriguez was accompanied by the Director-General for Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands, Maria Fernandez. He requested an audience with Berta Cabral to present a political perspective on the evolution of mobility and supply to the Macaronesian islands.
Both government officials discussed matters concerning the supply to the Azores and the Canary Islands, the logistics required for transatlantic shipping, integration into the European Union and the relations between the Macaronesian islands.
Berta Cabral and Pablo Rodriguez discussed the challenges posed by the European Commission's new policies on the green transition and carbon taxes for air and maritime transport, considering the significant differences between the Outermost Regions and central Europe.
Berta Cabral defends the need for unity among all Outermost Regions to take coordinated positions with the European Commission on these new policies that are tailored to the specific reality of outermost islands.
At the end of the meeting, both government officials agreed to work together to develop strategic partnerships involving all the regions of Macaronesia.
Pablo Rodriguez also met with the Regional Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, Paulo Estêvão, during his visit to São Miguel.
