The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, received the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, Xanana Gusmão, on the island of Faial as part of his visit to Portugal.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed the possibility of strengthening bilateral relations between the Azores and East Timor.

According to the leader of the Azorean Government, the meeting aimed to deepen the ties of friendship and solidarity as well as outline "a strategic vision for a Portuguese-speaking region," with special emphasis on matters related to the sea and oceans.

The President of the Government also highlighted the importance of promoting the sea as a "vital asset for the islands."

José Manuel Bolieiro also pointed out the Azores' commitment to leading by example when it comes to protecting the oceans, mentioning the Azores Marine Protected Areas Network (RAMPA), which will be debated and voted on this week at the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

This initiative intends to protect 30% of Azorean waters, thus fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations.

In terms of cooperation, José Manuel Bolieiro mentioned the intention to draw up a protocol between East Timor and Portugal, through the Azores, to "develop partnerships in various areas, namely the economy of the sea and scientific research led by the University of the Azores."

"This collaboration will lead to transatlantic relations between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, where East Timor can emerge as a leader with the support of the Azores," said José Manuel Boleiro.

The President of the Regional Government praised the historical importance of Xanana Gusmão. He referred to him as "an example of resilience" in a "peace project," highlighting his relevance on the world stage.

"When we join forces we increase our capacity," José Manuel Bolieiro said, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation between both peoples.

The visit took place in the city of Horta, Faial Island, where the importance of this island in promoting the sea and maritime relations between states was highlighted.
