Tribute to Teófilo Braga marks celebrations of 114th Anniversary of Implantation of the Republic

The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, took part today in the celebrations marking the 114th anniversary of the Implantation of the Republic, which took place at Praça do Município in Lisbon.
The event preceded the presentation of the catalogue "Teófilo Braga (1843-1924) - On the centenary of his death," produced by the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic in collaboration with Ponta Delgada City Council. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and various personalities.
The leader of the Azorean Government stressed the "importance" of evoking the memory of Teófilo Braga, who, a native of Ponta Delgada, Azores, distinguished himself not only as the second President of the Portuguese Republic but also as a writer and poet. He is the author of a vast body of work with more than 300 titles covering areas such as history, philosophy, theatre and poetry.
"There is always an Azorean in the great transformative moments of Portugal. I feel that Portugal can count on the Azoreans, as it always has, and on the Azores," noted José Manuel Bolieiro.
"Azoreans anywhere in the world are extremely proud of their Portuguese identity, their role in shaping Portugal and their influence on Portugal's capabilities," he added.
José Manuel Bolieiro highlighted the legacy of Teófilo Braga, considering him "an important figure" both nationally and internationally. He also recalled the "his contribution to shaping Portugal's cultural and political identity."
"As Azoreans, we honour Teófilo Braga as a Portuguese citizen, whose civic example and dedication to the public cause are inspiring," said José Manuel Bolieiro.
As part of the celebrations, the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, accompanied by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Mayor of Ponta Delgada, Pedro do Nascimento Cabral, took part in the laying of a wreath at the tomb of Teófilo Braga at the National Pantheon in Lisbon.
This symbolic moment marked the centenary of Teófilo Braga's death, acknowledging his historical and cultural importance to Portugal.
