Regional Government assesses storm damage on Corvo Island

Presidência do Governo Regional

The Regional Government announces that the assessment of the damage caused by the severe storm that hit Corvo Island in the early hours of October 3 is already underway.

The weather event, fuelled by strong winds and heavy rain, caused significant damage to various public and private infrastructures, mobilising several teams from the Regional Services of the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure (SRTMI) and the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action (SRAAC).

The impact of the storm affected essential infrastructures, including roads, public buildings and houses, prompting a rapid response from the regional authorities.

Road blockages and structural damage to both residential and public buildings were reported, requiring immediate interventions to ensure the safety of the population and guarantee the recovery of the affected areas.

Several government teams are already on the ground, working together to carry out clean-up operations, remove debris and assess repair needs.

The Regional Government underlines the priority of ensuring the rapid recovery of critical areas, avoiding additional risks for residents. An initial assessment estimates the value of the damage caused by the storm at around 200 thousand Euros.

The regional authorities will continue to closely monitor the situation and plan future prevention and mitigation actions, with a view to ensuring that the island of Corvo recovers fully and is better prepared to face any extreme weather event in the future.
