The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, visited today, as part of the statutory visit to Santa Maria, the Vila do Porto port where works to repair the breakwater protection mantle, resurface the quay platform and refurbish port infrastructures are underway.

This works contract follows the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo in 2019. It caused damage to the breakwater and marina jetty with the differential settlement of the curtain wall, the dragging of the protection materials and the breakwater head into the deeper seabed, thus causing the protection of the commercial quay and marina breakwaters to be lost.

As part of the emergency works, our goal is to fully restore the Vila do Porto Port to ensure regular supply to the island by sea.

"The people of Santa Maria are to be congratulated as they will now have a renovated and solid infrastructure with installed capacity for their regular supply needs by sea," said José Manuel Bolieiro. He was accompanied by the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, the Mayor of Vila do Porto, Bárbara Chaves, and members of the Board of Directors of Portos dos Açores (regional port authorities).

"This is an important project for the island of Santa Maria," he said, pointing out that it involves an investment of more than 21 million Euros, which will be completed by the end of the first half of 2025 and whose serviceability "will meet the most pressing needs."

The repairs planned for the Vila do Porto Port infrastructures cover the following areas: the marina, the quay pillars, the commercial quay, the quay platform and the port operations building.
