The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, in conjunction with the Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, presented today the modular hospital project to political parties with parliamentary representation. The meeting was attended by the Clinical Board, the Nursing Board and the Board of Directors of the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital (HDES).

José Manuel Bolieiro saluted the parties present for their responsibility and willingness to participate in the search for solutions, emphasising that the "solution for the hospital was developed based on technical and scientific knowledge."

"There is long-term strategic planning and an option to achieve excellence in the meantime while a functional programme for HDES is underway," he said.

Despite not being a new hospital, the "modular hospital will have the characteristics of a new structure in the Azores," being the most important hospital in the Region and of paramount importance and relevance in the national context.

The structure will be made up of various facilities, including the following: a General Emergency Department with capacity for 12 boxes,' two emergency rooms, a Paediatric Emergency Department with six observation beds and an isolation room, two wards with capacity for at least 80 patients, an imaging service with suitable equipment, two operating rooms with six recovery beds, an intensive and intermediate care unit with capacity for 12 patients, including an isolation room, and a delivery ward, including a neonatology unit, and up to nine beds for pregnant women.

The investment in this modular structure will exceed 12 million Euros. There will be procurement procedures for the purchase of new equipment to outfit the modular hospital.

The Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, presented the project to journalists after the meeting with the political parties.

She also announced that the entire structure of the modular hospital is expected to be completed by the end of October, with the general emergency department already up and operating by the end of August.

The panels for the modular structure that will accommodate the general and paediatric emergency departments (40 modules) and the wards (a further 55 modules) are already near HDES.

The modular hospital will serve as a backup structure, providing additional capacity during the repair, resizing and functional reorganisation of the current HDES structure.

The project was drawn up with the input of professional organisations, national experts and the HDES Board of Directors, maintaining a "focus on objectives and responsible decision-making."
