The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, stressed that the "Revelation Destination - Azores Routes" award, delivered by AHRESP (Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Similar Services of Portugal), "represents another important recognition for the work done by the Regional Government in this important economic sector," honouring the Region.

The AHRESP awards are now in their eighth edition and distinguish companies, institutions, establishments, regions, events, products, services and professionals in the catering, accommodation and tourism promotion sectors in Portugal.

Berta Cabral pointed out that the project Azores Routes - Cultural and Landscape Itineraries emerged with the aim of responding to a shortcoming in the Azores Destination's tourism offer. According to her, it reveals "the complementary diversity of the unique cultural reality of each of the nine islands."

"It is a great source of pride for all of us Azoreans to receive this national distinction, which covers the Whaling Route, the Volcanoes Route, the Wine Route and the Cheese Route, soon to be joined by the Industrial Tourism Route and the Maritime Expansion Route. All these Routes showcase the best resources we have throughout our island territory," she said.

She recalled that the Regional Secretariat for Tourism is structuring the creation of the Cultural Tourism Route and the Military Tourism Route in Angra do Heroísmo - a World Heritage City.

He added: "We simply have outstanding conditions to mitigate seasonality and attract visitors to every corner of our territory."

The Azores were chosen by the World Travel Awards as the "Best Adventure Tourism Destination in Europe 2024," while Green Destinations awarded the Region the QualityCoast prize for its outstanding coastal environmental quality and commitment to sustainable tourism.

In 2023, the Azores were chosen by the World TravelAwards as the "Best Adventure Destination in the World," after three consecutive years as the "Best Adventure Destination in Europe" (2020, 2021 and 2022).

All these awards, she said, "confer great prestige on the Region and validate the work" that the Regional Government "has been doing to place the Azores at the highest levels of tourism worldwide as a unique destination, all year round and on all  islands."

Berta Cabral also noted that there is a growing number of initiatives taking place on all islands. They "highlight the potential and importance of nature and adventure tourism for the Azores as a destination of choice for creating more economic value and, consequently, for the well-being of the population."
