The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, emphasised on Tuesday evening, at the end of the meeting with the São Jorge Island Council, that the Government had provided this entity with a "detailed explanation of how much has been done" on the island as well as data on "what is underway and what are the plans" for the future.

"São Jorge is better today than it has ever been" in areas such as accessibility, the economy and healthcare, he emphasised, speaking to journalists after a three-hour meeting between the Government of the Azores and the São Jorge Island Council.

The meeting marked the end of the second of a three-day statutory visit to the island.

While admitting that "living on twelfths does not stop everything but conditions new actions," José Manuel Bolieiro praised the recent approval of the 2024 Plan and Budget and recalled the progress made during the years of PSD/CDS-PP/PPM governance, namely regarding the Velas Health Centre.

"In these matters, and I will not compromise on this, the Government looks at the whole. It looks at the Region and the nine islands in terms of needs and priorities," he also pointed out.

The statutory visit to São Jorge, which ends today, included, in addition to the meeting of the Island Council, several meetings with the mayors of the island's two municipalities, Velas and Calheta, and events with different members of the Regional Government.
