Presidency of the Government marks National Garden Day by opening Sant'Ana Palace garden
Presidência do Governo Regional
The Presidency of the Government of the Azores marks National Garden Day, which will be celebrated on Saturday, May 25, by opening the Sant'Ana Palace garden, in Ponta Delgada, to the public between 10 am and 4 pm.
A remarkable example of landscaping and botany, dating back to the mid-19th century, it was planted by José Jácome Correia (1816-1886) and designed by Peter Wallace (b. 1820), a Scotsman who lived in Ponta Delgada between 1850 and 1857.
It still retains the spirit of the period in which it was created. It is surrounded by a large parterre that extends to the neoclassical façade of the palace, which currently houses the official residence of the President of the Government of the Azores.
Its rich botanical collections include the huge New Zealand Christmas Tree (Metrosideros excelsa), the Moreton Bay fig from Australia (Ficus macrophylla), the melaleucas (Melaleuca armillaris, Melaleuca linariifolia and Melaleuca styphelioides) and the araucarias (Araucaria bidwillii, Araucaria columnaris and Araucaria heterophylla), among other specimens.
Along with the palace, it was classified as a Regional Monument by Regional Legislative Decree no. 29/2004/A of August 24.
