The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, expressed today his availability for a summit between the two governments after the new National Government takes office to discuss matters of mutual interest.

"I hope there will soon be a fully functioning government in the country as well as political and governmental stability in the country because the Azores also claim this responsibility," emphasised José Manuel Bolieiro.

The President of the Government spoke after the announcement of Luís Montenegro's appointment as Prime Minister of Portugal.

"I hope the Prime Minister will be a friend of Portugal and to be a friend of Portugal, he cannot ignore the need for an impartial and supportive approach to the development of the Azores. Portugal is less without the Azores," he continued.

Some of the pending matters with the Azores by the current National Government include, for example, the transfer of funds as part of national solidarity following the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo and Effrain Depression, the delay in the construction of fibre-optic submarine cables and public service obligations (PSOs) in air transport.

José Manuel Bolieiro also mentioned matters related to sectors such as agriculture, whose "national understanding cannot exclude the Azores" or investments in the RTP branch in the Azores.

Today, the President of the Republic appointed Luís Montenegro, leader of the Democratic Alliance (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM parties) as Prime Minister of Portugal.
