Regional Government joins group to award contracts for new "white zone" fibre optic networks, especially in São Jorge and Flores
location Ponta Delgada

Presidência do Governo Regional

The Regional Government is part of the group of contracting entities that have launched the public tender for the installation of new fibre optic networks in areas where high-speed internet connection is not available - the so-called "white zones" - which are particularly relevant in the Region on the islands of São Jorge and Flores.

The tender will lead to improvements for all islands and municipalities. It will specifically benefit the parishes of Topo and Santo Antão on the island of São Jorge, and the parish of Ponta Delgada on the island of Flores.

In an order published recently in the Official Journal, the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, decided that the Azores should be part of the nationwide grouping. It includes the Regional Coordination and Development Commissions of Mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which launched the public tender for the installation of fibre optic networks in areas of the country where high-speed internet connections are non-existent.

In the Azores, an investment of about 950 thousand Euros is planned for the installation of fibre optic networks in the only three parishes of the archipelago without high-speed internet connections - Topo and Santo Antão (municipality of Calheta, São Jorge Island) and Ponta Delgada (municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores, Flores Island), as well as in other areas throughout the archipelago.

The Regional Government aims to bring fibre optics to everyone.
