The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, received the President of the Region of Western Pomerania, Olgierd Geblewicz, leader of the EPP in the Committee of the Regions, at an audience held at the Sant'Ana Palace.

The meeting served as an opportunity for both political leaders to address matters concerning the challenges that Outermost Regions, such as the Azores, face, namely connectivity and air and sea transport, which are essential for the supply of essential goods.

"It is essential to adapt EU action to the specific characteristics of the Outermost Regions" as well as to create a specific POSEI programme for transport, as a way of addressing the constraints of accessibility in these regions, stressed José Manuel Bolieiro.

The need to step up efforts to support the Azores was also on the agenda, following the opinion of the Committee of the Regions on the potential of the Outermost Regions of the European Union, a document that was unanimously approved and submitted to the European Commission.

Olgierd Geblewicz, a member of the European Committee of the Regions since 2011, and President of the EPP Group in that body since January 2020, considered that, given the specific challenges of Outermost Regions, "no region should be left behind." He also noted that transport and connectivity constraints must be addressed by European institutions.
