Subsecretário Regional da Presidência

The office of the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency, through the Azores Mission Structure for Space, is holding a public session to launch the World Space Week 2023 at the Auditorium of the Ponta Delgada Public Library on October 4 at 10 am. The event will be attended by Cláudio Gomes, Physicist and National Coordinator of the World Space Week, and Mariana Ávila, an Earth Observation specialist from the AIR Centre.

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to improving the human condition.

The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week would be held every year from October 4 (the day marking the launch of the first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957) to October 10 (the date the Outer Space Treaty was signed in 1967).

The event, open to the public, has a component of dissemination and promotion of scientific culture dedicated to school-age young people, as a way of disseminating the importance of space exploration and the use of space technologies for the benefit of humanity.

This year's edition of World Space Week pays particular attention to entrepreneurship in the space sector.
