Regional Secretariat for Health and Sport regrets death of Dr. Álvaro Gregório
Secretaria Regional da Saúde e Desporto
The Regional Secretariat for Health and Sport expresses its regret at the death of Dr. Álvaro Gregório at the age of 86.
A native of Graciosa, he worked on his island as a doctor and head of the Island Health Centre. He also practised medicine at the Angra do Heroísmo Hospital, specialising in Internal Medicine and Immunoallergology, where he served as Director of the Medical Service and President of the Board of Directors.
After retiring, he continued to work at the Azores Oncology Centre and did voluntary work in some institutions such as the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Angra do Heroísmo, namely in geriatrics.
His professional integrity is not the only reason he is missed. His friendly and humorous personality, his concern for his patients and the good name he brought to the Azores are other reasons why he has left his unforgettable mark. This fact was publicly acknowledged by the Legislative Assembly of the Azores, which awarded him the Autonomous Commendatio of Professional Merit on Azores Day 2012, as did the Presidency of the Republic when it bestowed upon him the degree of Commander of the Order of Merit.
Álvaro Graco da Cunha Gregório was born in Santa Cruz da Graciosa on September 8, 1936, and died yesterday in Angra do Heroísmo.
