The Regional Government welcomes the adoption of the report on the European Commission's new strategy for the Outermost Regions (ORs) by the European Parliament, which took place during this week's plenary session in Strasbourg.

The position adopted by the European Parliament will strengthen the efforts of the Outermost Regions (ORs) to speed up the implementation of the new strategy implemented by the European Commission so that they can better address the many challenges they face.

In a world marked by a plurality of crises, the aim is to provide these regions with specific policies and support tailored to the needs of each of them, as they are geographically dispersed and far from the European mainland, facing additional difficulties due to their remoteness; however, they are important assets for the EU for their added value beyond its borders.

Under the title "Putting people first, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth by unlocking the potential of the EU's outermost regions," the renewed strategy for the Outermost Regions was adopted by the European Commission in May 2022. This was a response to calls from the Conference of Presidents of the Outermost Regions (CPOP) and the commitment made in Ponta Delgada during the Azorean Presidency.

It is also important to highlight the important opinion adopted by the Committee of the Regions on February 8 of this year. The rapporteur was Pedro de Faria e Castro, Under Secretary of the Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores.

With this position, the European Parliament joins the privileged partnership established between the Outermost Regions and the European Commission, clearly placing itself on the side of the Outermost Regions in the defence of their interests - a fact the Regional Government warmly welcomes, confident that it can continue to work as closely as it is committed to these two major EU institutions.
