The President of the Regional Government of the Azores took part this Monday in the meeting of the Supreme Council of Internal Security chaired by the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, which took place at the Foz Palace in Lisbon. The Annual Internal Security Report (RASI) for 2022 was under analysis at this meeting and will be submitted to the National Assembly.

Despite the fact that 2022 showed an increase in overall crime in Portugal of about 14.1%, the Azores were the only region in the country that registered a decrease in overall crime of -2.6%. There was a decrease in crimes such as defamation, libel and slander, computer fraud, threat and coercion, vehicle theft and driving without a valid license.

However, violent and serious crime registered an increase of 12 cases, compared to 2021, but there was a decrease in crimes related to physical assault, extortion and theft on public roads, whereas there was an increase in 1667 reports filed nationwide.

The President of the Regional Government took the opportunity to acknowledge and praise the efforts of Public Security Forces and Services that contribute on a daily basis to the security of the Azores and Azoreans, thus ensuring a stable sense of security in general.
