Regional Government of the Azores joins Earth Hour initiative
Presidência do Governo Regional
The Regional Government of the Azores will take part in the Earth Hour initiative, a global event held annually, which will take place this Saturday from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm local time.
This initiative began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has since spread around the world. The event has involved more than 190 countries and territories. In many of the world's major cities, lights are switched off on famous monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Coliseum in Rome and the Empire State Building in New York.
This year, the Earth Hour will be another opportunity for the Autonomous Region and the Azorean society to show their commitment to the protection of the planet, promoting a change towards a more sustainable future.
It is an occasion to reflect on our consumption habits and to become aware of the importance of individual and collective actions in favour of the environment.
During these 60 minutes, millions of people around the world will simultaneously switch off their lights, symbolically demonstrating their willingness to contribute to a healthier planet.
The event is organised by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and is an incentive for all communities to unite in the fight against climate change.
Earth Hour is a moment for citizens to reflect on the way they use electricity and natural resources in their daily lives. It is also a way to show solidarity with people around the world who are also facing the consequences of climate change, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes and other natural disasters
Our archipelago, like many other island regions, is particularly affected by the current climate situation. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification and more intense storms are some of the threats the Region is facing. By joining this initiative, we will contribute to the awareness of the need to work together to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
By switching off the lights for an hour, we are sending an important message about the need to take action now to protect our planet for future generations.
The Regional Government counts on everyone in this significant moment, demonstrating once again the Azoreans' devotion to nature as well as their active participation in the defence of the Planet's natural resources.
These will be the buildings whose lights will be switched off:
