Secretaria Regional da Agricultura e do Desenvolvimento Rural
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, António Ventura, recalled today that, according to recent indicators, the contribution of agriculture to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Azores is 6.8%, compared to 1.5% of the sector in Mainland Portugal - four times more.
"In the Azores, we produce quality agri-foods. In the Azores, farmers have not stopped working these two years and now they are back to show the best of what they do," said the government official.
António Ventura spoke in Horta at the Faial Agricultural and Trade Fair, which will take place between May 20 and 22.
On the occasion, the government official recalled the need for the Azores to continue the “path towards food self-sufficiency.”
"We are poor if we do not produce food," he added, speaking at a press conference where the Mayor of Horta, Carlos Ferreira, was also present.
The Faial Agricultural and Trade Fair will include contests, exhibitions, cuisine events as well as various cultural and entertainment activities.
