The Regional Government is working on a new legal regime to support the media, as announced yesterday by the Regional Secretary for Health and Sport, Clélio Meneses, at the session celebrating the 75th anniversary of Rádio Clube de Angra (RCA).

Clélio Meneses attended the ceremony on behalf of the President of the Government of the Azores. On the occasion, he stated that "despite the exceptional support amounting to half a million Euros that was granted last year to mitigate the constraints of the pandemic, a legal regime is being created to eliminate all administrative difficulties, identifying fixed supports to all media companies."

The government official considered that this initiative "is a way of ensuring a free media that is truly the focal point of a healthy society."

“At a time when information is so trivialised and so minimised, when many take advantage of technology to pass on information that is often solely based on personal and group interests, or even on false information, media outlets are instrumental in putting this information in its rightful place," he said.

Clélio Meneses ensured the Regional Government's commitment towards a partnership based on the construction of a "healthier and freer" society. In this context, he considered that "governments are not the owners of anything, they are only partners, and sometimes regulators, but they are always the driving force of a free society."

Clélio Meneses expressed his wish that, through this partnership, the Rádio Clube de Angra may be able to secure support and "continue to be what it has always been and continue with its commitment towards truth, information and freedom, for which it is a great example."

The Regional Secretary for Health and Sport highlighted the "stoic resistance" of RCA in its seven and a half decades of existence. As he emphasised, it is "the culmination of the love of those who made it and continue to do so," recalling that the Voz da Terceira, as this radio station is popularly known, is a "reference in various moments of the social and political life" of the island and the archipelago.

The session celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Rádio Clube de Angra do Heroísmo, held this Sunday evening at the station's auditorium, was attended by its leaders and associates as well as by local political and social leaders. On the occasion, former directors and staff members were also honoured.
