Minister of Education, Science and Innovation visits Azores to strengthen science and innovation cooperation

The Regional Government will welcome the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, Helena Canhão, for a visit between January 9 and 13. The visit is part of a work programme dedicated to the fields of education, science, innovation and technological development, covering the islands of São Miguel, Santa Maria and Faial.
The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, and the Vice-President of the Government, Artur Lima, will accompany different moments of this visit. It will include institutional contacts and visits to projects and infrastructures relevant to the Region, with a special focus on higher education, scientific research, the space sector and new technologies applied to knowledge and the sea.
On the island of São Miguel, the visit includes working sessions with the University of the Azores and a visit to NONAGON – São Miguel Science and Technology Park, with a view to promoting the regional innovation ecosystem and the role played by the Region in linking science, entrepreneurship and development.
In Santa Maria, the programme focuses on the space sector, with visits to the Portuguese Space Agency, Teleport and RAEGE Station, as well as follow-up meetings on ongoing projects and development prospects in this strategic area for the island and the Azores.
In Faial, the delegation will visit the OKEANOS Institute, a research unit of the University of the Azores, and participate in initiatives focused on marine technology matters, including actions aimed at promoting digital skills in schools.
This visit further strengthens institutional cooperation between the National Government and the Azorean Government, at a time when the Region is increasingly consolidating its contribution in the fields of knowledge, scientific research, technological innovation and new opportunities linked to the sea and space.
