The Regional Secretariat for Health and Sport, through the Regional Directorate for Sport, will promote a "Race/Walk for Peace" on April 9 at 4 pm. The initiative will be held simultaneously on eight of the nine islands of the Azores with the aim of marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

This is an event celebrated on April 6. The Region also joins the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth - IPDJ in an initiative held throughout the country, next Saturday, April 9.

The World Day of Physical Activity is also celebrated and marked on the same dates. Hence, both events will be marked with the "Race/Walk for Peace." It will include all the islands of the Azores (except São Jorge, which had to cancel the events due to the seismovolcanic crisis) in a powerful dynamic at a regional level, so as to place the entire archipelago in the national context.

With this initiative and joint efforts in this mission to promote the practice of physical activity and peace, we intend to raise awareness for the importance of physical activity among the entire population. The aim is to promote the creation of healthy living habits and well-being as well as to encourage regular physical activity in all age groups and throughout life.

On the other hand, we intend to recognise the value of sport as a product in society and as a vehicle for communication and socialisation capable of projecting and amplifying universal messages for the common good, such as the call for peace.

As such, all islands in the Azores - excluding São Jorge - will organise a "Race/Walk for Peace," according to the information available via the link https://portal.azores.gov.pt/web/drd/corrida-da-paz, as well as other sports activities to mark the importance of this theme and date.

Let us all take part in this initiative that has as its motto the call for universal peace and the power of sport as a means of strengthening social ties.
