11 new positive COVID-19 cases were diagnosed in the Azores, with 10 on the island of São Miguel and one on the island of Faial, following 914 tests carried out in the reference laboratories.

On the island of São Miguel, there are two positive cases found in mass screening in schools (unvaccinated students in cycle 1 and 2). All other cases are related to community transmission context.

On the island of Faial, there is a new case in the parish of Angústias, municipality of Horta, still to be assessed.

Hospitalisations:

As of today, there are 11 patients hospitalised, six at the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital in Ponta Delgada, one in intensive care, three at the Santo Espírito Hospital of Terceira Island, with one in intensive care, and two at the Horta Hospital, also with one in intensive care.

Local transmission chains: 

In the last 24 hours, a primary local transmission chain has been extinguished on the island of Pico. Seven chains are active today, five on the island of Terceira, one on the island of Faial and one shared between the islands of Faial and Pico. To date, 247 have been extinguished. There are 401 people under active surveillance today.

Current situation:

Two previously reported cases on the island of São Miguel, municipality of Ponta Delgada, for which SARS-CoV-2 screening tests produced positive results, provided documentation demonstrating a previous infection and its recovery, and are no longer considered to be active cases.    

The archipelago currently registers 130 positive active cases: 105 on the island of São Miguel, 11 on the island of Faial, 11 on the island of Terceira and three on the island of Pico.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 9,004 positive cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed in the Azores and 8,652 people recovered from the disease. There were 42 deaths, 95 people who left the archipelago and 85 cases with history of previous cure. To date, 702,573 tests have been carried out in the archipelago to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19 disease .

From 31 December 2020 to September 20, 172,284 people in the Azores have been vaccinated with the first dose (72,8 per cent) and 186,398 with complete vaccination (78,8 per cent), under the Regional Vaccination Plan.
