The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, presided over the ceremony honouring the former mayor of the parish of Candelária (Ponta Delgada), João Alberto Pereira.

"This is in recognition of his contribution to the social and cultural development of the parish of Candelária," recalled José Manuel Bolieiro.

During the event, two plaques were unveiled: one at "Avenida João Alberto Pereira," the proposed name for the Ramal da Igreja, and another at the Candelária Social and Recreational Pavilion, which will be renamed "João Alberto Pereira Multipurpose Hall."

Born in Candelária and an active figure in the parish and municipality of Ponta Delgada, João Alberto Pereira was co-founder and president of the local Youth Association and served as president of the Parish Council between 2013 and 2022. The former mayor died on January 1, 2023, aged 52, having passed on a legacy of commitment to public service and the promotion of social initiatives.

The head of the Azorean Government stated that João Alberto Pereira's career "is an example for all mayors" and the population in general, emphasising the importance of the Regional Government continuing to invest in local development, supporting mayors and local power.

The tribute aimed to preserve the memory of the former mayor and consolidate the commitment to future generations, encouraging the maintenance of projects and services that have benefited the parish and the municipality over the years. The event brought together the population, who paid their respects, acknowledging the deceased's contribution to the progress of the Region and the municipality of Ponta Delgada.
