To mark World Elderly Day, Mónica Seidi visited Manuel Souza Lima, one of the beneficiaries of the "New Elderly" programme since December 2023.

"This programme has shifted the ageing paradigm. It is a great success and we now want to extend it to all the municipalities in the Region," said the Regional Secretary responsible for Social Security.

"We are working with 12 organisations," said the Secretary for Health and Social Security.

She added: "The number of vacancies available for this phase is 221. We are very proud to have such a positive effect on people's lives, particularly those who have worked all their lives and can now enjoy greater comfort."

The programme will represent an investment of more than four million Euros by 2025. The application period for the third phase of the "New Elderly" programme ended on September 13 and the technical teams are currently assessing more than 500 applications submitted.

"The demand for the programme is high and has been rising, with more than 500 applications at the moment. This proves the success of this work while guaranteeing its continuation as the availability of vacancies is dynamic. Once again, this is clear evidence of the Government's investment in people," emphasised Mónica Seidi.

"This programme has shifted the ageing paradigm," she added.

She explained: "This individual had lived alone since his widowhood and, with the support of someone, he has been able to live in his own home, overcome loneliness and work on his cognitive skills. He is very happy and fully integrated, which demonstrates society's acceptance and the success of this programme.
