The Regional Government, led by José Manuel Bolieiro, welcomes the results released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), which show sustainable growth in the Azorean tourism sector.

In August 2024, the Autonomous Region of the Azores recorded a 7.5% increase in the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, in contrast to the 2% drop in the average stays registered at a national level.

Between January and August 2024, the Azores consolidated an 8.5% increase in overall overnight stays, with a 12.8% growth in non-resident tourists and a 1.4% increase in overnight stays by residents.

These results demonstrate the ongoing commitment of the Regional Government to promoting the Region as a tourist destination of excellence, capable of attracting both international and domestic visitors, as well as boosting domestic tourism.

José Manuel Bolieiro expressed his "satisfaction" at this milestone, pointing out that the Azores were the second region in the country with the highest growth in the number of overnight stays, after the Setúbal peninsula, which registered an increase of 8.1%.

"I congratulate the efforts of all those involved in the tourism sector, from entrepreneurs to tourism professionals, for their fundamental role in the continued consolidation of the Azores as a sustainable destination of excellence," says José Manuel Bolieiro.

These results, he added, "reflect a successful strategy and continuous work in favour of the harmonious economic development" of the nine islands and the promotion of the Azores.

Regarding the average stay in tourist accommodation establishments, the Azores ranked third nationally in August, with an average of 3.17 nights, surpassing the national average of 2.8 nights. Between January and August, the Azores also held third place, with an average stay of 3.01 nights, compared to the national average of 2.58 nights.

The President of the Government reiterated the Regional Government's commitment to pursuing policies that promote "sustainable tourism growth," ensuring that the Azores consolidate their position as a "destination of reference, respecting the environmental balance and preserving the cultural identity of the archipelago."
