Vice-President of the Government considers replacement of inter-island submarine cables "urgent"
Vice-Presidência do Governo Regional
The Vice-President of the Regional Government, Artur Lima, warned of the urgency of replacing inter-island submarine cables, reiterating the need for a working group to be set up to make progress with this process.
"The new inter-island submarine cable is important. It is a matter of great urgency. For this reason, I have already sent a letter to the Minister for Infrastructures requesting the creation of a joint working group with ANACOM, the National Governments and the Regional Government, so that we can start this process," he stressed.
He continued: "The inter-island ring is extremely urgent and, above all, the respective funding."
On May 9, the Vice-President of the Government sent a letter to the National Government requesting the "urgent creation" of a working group to "analyse the most appropriate technical solution for the rapid replacement of inter-island submarine cables."
It should be noted that the Regional Government is still awaiting a reply to the letter, with Artur Lima assuring that he will "soon" have a face-to-face meeting with the Minister for Infrastructures.
Artur Lima spoke after a meeting with the President of ANACOM, Sandra Maximiano, where he thanked the national authority for its work in favour of "secure and reliable communications" in the Region.
"This is my first visit to these facilities [ANACOM delegation in the Azores]. I was very pleased with the work being done here (...) for the security of the Azoreans' communications. In the 21st century, it is important to have secure, reliable and daily communications," he said.
On the occasion, the Vice-President, who is responsible for the areas of communications and digital transition, thanked ANACOM for the "work it has done over the years and for what it is proposing to do in terms of improving staff, training (...) and monitoring networks and communications traffic."
